There are a lot of Sump options to choose from. Some are super basic, while others are quite complex and feature-rich. But does a fancier and pricier sump make you a better reefer? Let's find out.
Comparing a basic sump with a fancy feature-rich sump, despite the visual differences, they still essentially look the same way. Water enters the sump on one end and passes through baffles that create various sections where filtration can be housed; it reaches the last section where the return pump is located and sends the water back up to the aquarium.
So why do people spend thousands of fancy sumps that are of the same size as the basic sump that costs less than $300? There are two reasons.
Additional Features
Like problem-inducing tube holders, quite a water entry systems, adjustable or removable baffles, push connect fittings, as well as additional filtration elements like a built-in ATM filter roller, dedicated chambers & design features to support specific types of reefing.
Appearances
For those who want a flashy and cool-looking sump, there are vanity sumps that go above and beyond to not only provide a base for all the filtration but also look stunning at the same time.
It is awesome, for sure but also 100% unnecessary for a thriving reef aquarium.
The Verdict
A simple sump is going to do the job and will not hold you back from reefing success. Even they are more versatile because none of the add-on features is walked in place. So you can get what you want separately and add them to the sump whenever you like and move them around if you decide to change things up.
It will look fairly basic, but ultimately, it is as capable of helping you achieve a dream reef tank at just about another sump.
There is a huge range between basic and the most expensive sumps, and that range is where most of us find the match for our goals. You can choose sumps that sustain your needs.
The super fancy and expensive sumps are great on their own term, but it's not necessary for a great reef.
