This article is about the Goniopora Flowerpot Corals. Truth be known, this coral has one of the worst reputations in the entire reef-keeping hobby and, for a long time, was considered impossible to keep.
If you are lucky, though, you can propagate them in your facility.
Origin
Most of the horror stories of these corals dying after a few months originated from the stoke Sea Species commonly found in Indonesia. However, almost all of them today come from Australia.
Appearance
It's no mystery why these delicate corals are so popular. If a very familiar appearance is that of a bouquet blowing in the wind, they come in a wide variety of colors.
Feeding Habits
We can tell that the corals are healthy and growing because newer polyps form in between the more mature polyps. One possible reason the Flowerpot coral does well for many reefers is the feeding regimen.
Try to see if it responds to food whenever you encounter delicate species. As per reefing experts, corals who accept feeding tend to do better.
However, the problem with the Goniopora Flowerpot Corals is that they are very sensitive to contact. It seems like its first impulse is to shrink away from the food. So, it is important to introduce the food slightly off of the coral and then have the current take the food, rather than forcefully directing the food at it.
The feeding behaviors should look like the stalks start a bobbing motion and then take the food to the mouth located at the center of each branch.
Share your Stroy
We are curious if you have a particularly good lunch with this coral. As mentioned at the beginning, it is one of the corals considered impossible at one time.
A few years ago, there were even petitions floating around on online forums trying to ban their collection and boycott retailers that sold them.
So, if you had success, what do you think is the key to keeping them healthy long term?
