The type of livestock you keep in your tank will affect the type of substrate your keep and the rockwork and aquascape you'll be doing in the tank.
Make two lists when deciding on the livestock in your tank—one for coral and one for fish.
Coral-List
In addition to making the coral list, write down some of the different needs that each of the coral has.
Lighting Needs
if you are keeping a sun coral, these corals would not need a lot of light, and if you are keeping this coral, you'll have an area where it's not bright, which can benefit this species of coral.
For the corals that want a higher amount of light, you want to place them higher in the tank.
Water Flow
Not all corals need the same amount of water flow. So make sure that you have different areas in the tank that are getting different rates of flow and put those corals in there accordingly.
Aggressiveness
Corals can sting each other. Not only do they sting cells, but they can also grow super fast. Make sure you give such corals a bugger from where they are at in comparison to other corals.
The Fish List
You need to make a similar list of all the fish and inverts you want to keep. If you are going and looking for substrate, you'll see everything from super fine sand to coarse substrates. Now, depending upon the fish and investment, you keep, ensure you get the right size substrate for them.
