Top 10 Captive Bred Marine Fish for Reef Tank

In the marine hobby, it has become relatively easy today to multiply coral and grow an entire aquarium back into a large reef over the years with the help of small frags. A more problematic issue, however,  is the breeding of marine fish.

Here it is often the case that these animals need very special conditions to reproduce. Many travel long distances in the sea and are made with hundreds of others of their species.

Nevertheless, we have managed to breed more and more of these animals at home, making wild catches out of the reef unnecessary.

Many fish today may not be available everywhere in the world as offspring. So, here it depends very much on which country you are reading this article.

However, it is about what is possible today in 2022. So, here is the list of the top ten captive-bred marine fish for your reef tank.

Yellow Tangs

In many parts of the world, these animals can no longer be purchased as wild catches, and the price increased more and more due to an import stop. However, since the Yellow Tangs are excellent algae eaters and thus keep the aquarium clean, it is fantastic that you can now buy captive man breeds.

Bristle-Tail File Fish

These eat Aiptaisa. But be careful if you like to keep LPS corals in your aquarium, you should be considerate with this fish. It wants to eat some polyps. Nevertheless, it is excellent to get them as offspring.

Clownfish

The breeding of this fish is relatively simple. So, it is also possible to breed this species in a private aquarium at home. An advantage is that Clownfish live very location-oriented. Thus the eggs are always laid within reach of the Anemone, and the young offspring can be taken out of the aquarium at night and raised separately.

Bangai Cardinal Fish

Beautiful animals are best kept as a pair, even if the young ones preferably live in a swarm. These fish are mouth breeders and thus keep the young ones in their mouths for a while. This way, they protect the little ones from predators. Also, the little ones can grow up in the spines of sea urchins.

Mandarin Fish

Thes animals belong to the dragonet family and are best kept in pairs. They search the rocks all day long for tiny organisms and perform little dances for each other.

Copperband Butterfly Fish

These fishes are recently been available as offspring. However, people cannot buy them as offspring in many parts of the world.

Giant Calm

In big clam farms, it is possible to breed Giant Clams. So, you can get many offspring of these incredible animals worldwide, and you don't have to take them out of the reef anymore.

Marble-Mouthed Frogfish

Because it was finally possible to breed this fish, they are now widely available in the shop. But unfortunately, frogfish catch fishes out of the open water with their small fishing rod by luring them directly in the front of their mouth. So, this fish might not be suitable for aquariums with other small animals.

Fairy Basslet

With its beautiful colors, it is a real eye-catcher in the reef tank and likes to hide in a cage so that you often have to search for it. Also, this fish is relatively easy to get as offspring.

Seahorse

Here is very important to build an extra aquarium for these animals. Seahorses are relatively sensitive to stress and eat very slowly. Other fishes can quickly overpower these beautiful animals and eat away their food. So, it is essential to offer enough possibility to hold onto their tails and offer varied and living food.
