This article will discuss the most common DI Resin mistakes and why they are essential. The DI Resin is your final polish from the RO system. Anything with an electrical charge is going to be grabbed by the media.
So, let's dive into mistake number one:
Not Replacing on Time
You want to replace the resin because before, the resin turns dirty, yellow, and muddy. Before it hits complete depletion, you see dissolved solids showing back on your TDS meter. All those minerals are getting back into your RO water.
Therefore, it is recommended to have a half inch to an inch of the color remaining when you change the resin. If you are past that point, everything the resin holResinll is purged back into your water. So, you might see one TDS, but you miss the portion where everything is released back into your reservoir.
Not Containing the Resin
Your resin has tiny needs, and it gets everywhere. So, the best thing you can do is find a shallow box or bowl, something either easy to clean or you can throw away. Resin also sticks to skin and all surfaces, so caution is better.
Not Using the Proper PPE
PPE stands for personal protective equipment, such as gloves and glasses. These are important to protect your skin and keep the resins from getting into your eyes. If they do, they'll burn, and the size of the resins makes it hard to get out.
Not Properly Packing Your Resin
If you don't correctly pack the Resin in the canister, water will create channels, leaving you with TDS creep throughout your DI resin.
So, to ensure everything is working correctly, ensure the DI resin is packed in well. Add a couple of inches of resin, pack it in, and repeat until you reach the top. If you fill it to the top and then try to pack it, you'll spread the beads everywhere.
The best method is to use a funnel. Use any bottle to give slow taps to pack it to the top. A sponge will take over the small room left at the top, and you'll be ready to go.
Not Replacing the Sponge
The canister is reusable as long as the paper filter looks good. However, the sponge needs to be replaced regularly. Over time, it will lose its shape, making it much more challenging to get a proper path resin.
That's why it is recommended to change the sponges every time you pack your DI.

We all have to do what's comfortable for us. You can use pre-packed canisters if you don't want to deal with the mess.
