Buy tools. Compared to your fish or aquariums, tools are cheap. Even expensive tools work out reasonably, much more affordable than your electricity bill.
Don't buy 5-in-1 kits or multitools. And every aquarium multitool gets stuck doing one job rather badly for its whole life. So take care to research what you need.
Not every tool is created. Equally, some cheap tools only have minor disadvantages, but others will leave you in a pit of regrets. So, get it right first, and your budget will stretch much further.
Straight Tweezers
These are an extension of your hand, and you'll use them daily. You might think these are just for planting, but you'll use them for everything, including digging out your other tools when you drop them in the tank.
However, do know that cheap tweezers aren't as grippy or supple, and you'll struggle to plant successfully. So, buy a reputable brand, and you won't go far wrong.
Sprung Scissors
You'll regret bothering with anything put Sprung Scissors. The cheap ones get old and creaky far too quickly, and their length is another disadvantage.
So, buy from decent bran. These are the second extension of your hands.
Dennerle Cleantor
You might think you can get away with a kitchen sponge or scissors. It might seem silly, but no other cleaning device compares to this.
It's a perfect shape, suitable for cleaning algae, and will never scratch your glass.
Nets
This is less about expense and more about quantity. Buy a lot of nets. One net is never there when you need it., two nets are skills pushing luck.
Never be in a position where you can't immediately see a net near your aquarium. Also, shallow traps are handy for scooping up floating plants and debris.
Laser Thermometer
The more often you check your aquarium water temperature, the less likely you'll have any horrible incidents. It's a little pricey, but being able to assess water temperature from anywhere in your fish room will prove invaluable.
Plus, it's a laser. Everybody wants to own a laser.
Keep all these tools organized and within arm's reach. Buy a tool bucket to keep them close by. Add tools slowly as the need arises, doing your research and not cheating out.
It is better to have a few good tools than many useless ones. Also, pick a color different from all other towels in your house
