When done right, a saltwater aquarium is the most beautiful thing you can keep in your home. But some people take that to the next level. So here are the top 5 best reef tanks on the internet:
Worldwide Corals 1200g Lagoon
This tank was inspired by public aquariums that often have large, low-lying that can often be seen from the top down and side own.
It's a mixed reef with diverse corals, from wavy bright LPS corals to soft corals to branching SPS corals. It even has mangrove plants at the back, like an actual Lagoon.
The aquascape was designed to look like a hand with five fingers branching out, and even though the rock work was spaced initially out, in its four years of existence, the corals have grown so much that they are not stinging each other in a battle for territory.
Worldwide Coral says that the tank's glass was designed tall to avoid the need for unsightly bracing to support the extra water eight. But given this was in the shop, it was also partly to keep people's hands out of the tank.
David Saxby's 3,700g
This is one of the most spectacular home aquariums in the UK set in an equally stunning home. Based in London'ts prestigious high park, David Saxby's 3,700g.
It holds 3,700 gallons of salt water and was established ten years ago 2013. It's home to over 300 fishes, including some scarce and unique specimens you won't see anywhere else.
This tank has been featured in countless magazines and videos and was terrific for one of the best reef tanks on the internet. These fish and corals speak for themselves, and the stats on this tank are simply staggering.
It contains over a ton of live ocean rock and has a dedicated filtration room more significant than most of us keep our tanks. The tank's pump move enough water to fill a bathtub in just 5 seconds.
Mike's Killer Nano
A tank Reef Builder coined Mike's Killer Nano tank is at the polar opposite end of the scale. This is a merely 30-gallon LPS aquarium run by Mike from Elite Reef in Denver, Colorado. Because of small water volumes, Nano tanks like this are, in many ways, much more challenging to run than giant tanks because it is much more difficult to maintain stable parameters in a small body of water.
Mike compensates for that by keeping it simple. He does 20% water change once a week and does corals to replace the elements that corals use up to make their stony skeleton.
The corals are usually LPS or long polyp SPS corals, and it's rare to see such puffy healthy-looking LPS corals in such a small body of water.
Coral Euphoria's 120g
This reef belongs to Abe Tirona, who runs an online coral store and YouTube Channel called Coral Euphoria. It's known for the most stunning collection of Acrapora corals. Unfortunately, these are the most difficult corals to keep the hobby.
The tank runs on simple filtration, and there is no magic to its success. Just good filtration keeps the nutrient levels low and water movement to take waste away from coral and bring them the elements of nutrition and oxygen they need. Not to forget the skill, talent, and dedication of a reefer.
Andre Sadler's Million Dollar Reef Tank
Based in New York, Andre Sadler's Million Dollar Reef Tank 17000-gallon tank was set up in November 2019 after six years of planning and building. It measures 16X16X19 feet and is home to thousands of corals, fishes, and inverts.
You'll lose count of the fish around the 500 mark, including many rare and unique species that cost well over $20,000 each. But that number pales in significance compared to the running costs of around 30k-40k USD per month.
However, this is not just some vanity project because Andrew is a 30-year veteran in the hobby, and this tank is the culmination of his lifelong passion.
The filtration room is underground, and takes an entire staff team to look after it.
