6 Steps & Everything You Need for the First Time Coral Mounting

There are four ways to mount corals, frags, and plugs. But this is the best way to go about it.

The Gear

The right gear is critical to success here. So let's start with the essential gear frag disks and frag plugs.

There are two types:

  • A hard-fired ceramic types
  • Natural aragonite

While there is a time and place for ceramic frag disks and plugs for home use, it's best to go with aragonite because they are easy to break. So when it comes to mounting the coral, you can easily chip away at the corner, so you don't have to stare at a big frag disk.

For organizing your frags, discs, and plugs, you can use an organizer and a good frag cutting board to do all of the frag work.

For epoxy Tunza coral gum.

If you don't have a pair of large tweezers because sometimes you'll get coral frags that are too small for your fingers, tweezers are super helpful here. In addition, you can pick up any super glue.

Methodology

If you are using aragonite disks and plugs, it is best practice to cure them and cycle them before use. This will help with coral growth.

Start by looking at your frags and choosing the appropriate disks and plugs. Next place with I'm a bucket with tank water, allowing them to soak for a while.

Prepare your workstation. Lay everything out so it is easy to access and grab some extra paper towels for the inevitable spills and super glue. You'll have three saltwater containers in front of you for frag plugs, coral frags, and newly mounted frags.

For all three buckets, be sure to use the same tank of water you plan to put these corals into at the end of the day.

Now comes the easy part: Disc-glue-epoxy-glue-frag.

  • Place a small amount of super glue on the disk or plug
  • Take small & equal amounts of Tunza coral gum
  • Mix the epoxy in your fingers for 20-30 seconds
  • Roll the epoxy into a box and place it directly at the top of the superglue or plug
  • Place some super glue on top of the epoxy.
  • Use tweezers to place the coral frag onto the superglue and press into the epoxy, and you are done.
