Are you ready to keep a saltwater tank? Let's get the answers:
First, it's true that saltwater tanks are more work. But not like you think. It's true that it's more expensive, but only upfront, not so much in the long term. And it's true that you'll have a lot to learn but don't we all? Even in freshwater.
We are leading with all the potential negative just to bring them up front and center. But a lot of that is just hype. It's not that difficult. But you'll still loose fishes, kill coral, and go through disease or algae going on in your tank.
But didn't all that happen when you started freshwater, too? Didn't many of us have to go through the growing pains and the learning phases and deal with stuff that was driving us crazy?
It's the same thing in the saltwater. You are starting that learning curve over. But this time, you are better armed and prepared with a lot of freshwater knowledge.
You know about the nitrogen cycle that your tank has to follow —the same thing happens in saltwater. You know about maintenance and water changes. You know about filtration, the different kinds, and how they work.
Jumping into freshwater from a starting point of knowing absolutely nothing is more difficult than jumping into saltwater coming in with all the freshwater knowledge you've already acquired. Of course, there is a lot more to learn, but we are already starting at an advantage.
You are ready
Now that fear is out of the way, let's talk about your personally.
- How long have you had your freshwater tank?
- How many times have you changed your decor around?
- How many times have you changed your stock? Add fish you've never kept before, or remove fish that weren't what you expected.
- How many times did you change your filtration, your lighting, or your heater?
Your fish keeping hobby has been evolving with time. And maybe you are ready for the next challenging thing. While it will be challenging, it's not going to be any more difficult than all that freshwater fish-keeping information that you had to learn the first time around.
There is a lot of intimidating content on the saltwater side, but once things start clicking, you'll get super excited all over again, just like that first day you picked out your first freshwater fish.
