Every fish keepers want their fish to grow to their maximum length. But how to attain that desired length of a fish. Keep on reading and discover yourself:
What Science Says
There have been studies and talks about hormones and pheromones that the fishes release into the water that might limit the growth or impact how they interact with one another. But, this study was only conducted on food fish.
The study found that in some fishes like Koi fish, some hormones might impact the growth and how they also interact with one another. I thought this might be the case, but not everyone has the capability to test it in our aquarium fishes.
Aquarist Hypothesis
But, regardless of hormones or not, the size and growth of the fish come down to water quality. So if the fish are releasing hormones into the aquarium and staying on top of the water changes, you are essentially removing those hormones, thus taking out the growth inhibitors.
If there are no growth inhibitors in the water, then the water quality will still impact how they grow and behave in a tank.
Just take an example of yourself. If you are living in a clean environment, your body will take the energy into your growth. The same applies to fish if your fishes are in an environment where the water quality is poor. If there is a lot of stress and they are not getting the right, they are not going to grow and look as healthy because their body is focused on keeping them healthy and enhancing the growth.
So, if you want to grow your fish larger, you should focus on the water quality. But, water changes are not an easy and enjoyable task for most people, but keeping the water quality stable is the holy grail of a healthy aquarium.
Aquarium Plants
Other than water change, you can also keep aquarium plants. They absorb the nutrients from the water. So, if you fish are eating and after they eat, they have waste, you plant will take the by-product of the trash and use it as fertilizers.
So, the plants in your tank will help clean up the water by removing those lethal compounds in the water. If you have an overly stocked aquarium, then high-volume water changes might help. If extensive water changes are too much hassle, then try changing small portion every alternate day.
In a nutshell, the trick for the healthy fish is:
- water quality
- healthy and nutritious food
- creating a stress-free environment
