For fishkeepers, all we aspire for a tank is to be crystal clear and have a matured functioning sytem for our fishes to thrived and showcase their natural apperance. We all have different beleifs whe it comes to fishkeeping. A lot of us has their own preferred fish, tank size, and filtration systems.
With that being said, let me share with you some learnings that I have tried and applied in maintaining a tank. first would be our water change routine (WC). This would determine the health and appearance of or fishes in the tank. Mr friends woud tell me, "Take care of your water, and it ill take care of your fish". Having a WC routine would definitely make our hobby more fulfilling and keep us fascinated for years.
I would recommend to have a 20% WC routine once or twice a week depending on your bioload. The bigger the tank and the more inhabitants would mean a lot more WC. As we know, unseen dirt are abundant in our tanks. With regular WC, we would be able to help our filtration system do it's work.
After the WC routine, we come to the filter media management. Every WC, we could wash and clean the filter wool or change it when it can no longer be cleaned. just remember using tank water in cleaning the wool so we could have beneficial bacterias thrive longer. Rinse also with tank water other medias that you are using in your tanks. These would be lava rings, pumice, lava stones, etc. They can be rinsed once or twice a month for optimal usage.
Next on the list are the pumps and fittings. Slimy dirt gets into the pump chamber when used for a long preiod of time. This could affect the output performance of the pump. Referiing to tht manual guide helps us how to got about cleanng a cretain pump brand. Pump maintenance would depend on how your pump is performing. You could regulry check f the output has changed drastically, and that will let you know that iti is time for pum cleaning and maintenance. Takiing care f your pump will be beneficial. I for one, was able to utilize a RIO 17HF pump for 5 straight years before I sold it. I made sure that I regulary check the pump's output.
Finally, after doing all of these we could say that our job as an hobbyist is partially complete. We ow get to enjy the benefits of having our home fish tank. Having a healthy system, having happy fishes
