In this topic, our discussion will be focused on the top five tips on what you can do to improve your aquarium with almost not spending any money at all and our number five thing would be:
5. Water change
Now I'm going to break this into two different parts for you. One is obviously the giant massive maintenance water change while your fish can handle up to 50% if you're handling the temperatures properly. Then I want to break it down into a second more different style of water change which is doing that meticulous, tiny little bit of a water change where instead of using the big dog siphon, I would advise that you use the air stone and get in there and meticulously suck out all the tiny little bits of debris, then go all around the aquarium with just a tiny little bit of water getting sucked through and meticulously clean your plants. You may even want to get a little bit of a toothbrush on the end of it and scrape away all the algae and suck it up with a tiny little airline tubing.
4. Propagate your plants
This is really done by redesigning, expanding and exploring ways to increase and improving your aquascape. So, by just simply using the existing plants you have which I'm going to give some examples here; say you have some crypts which could be easily divided into two or three different segments or any other plant that you may have grown in your aquarium. All you have to do is take a little time to spread them out and the more you spread them, the more they grow. The other example is the anuabias which you can take it out, look at the veins on it, break it, spread it out and redesign it. You may also have a Bucephalandra that's doing well which you can simply spread out and use superglue in your drawer and put in some Bucephalandra trees. You may also have some Staurogyne which you can also split up. You can also meticulously improve your foreground by taking every little piece of baby tears one by one by spreading it out and work on creating that carpet you've been working for.
3. Dirtying your aquarium
If you have a bucket, plastic tubs, dirt out in your backyard, a shovel, an oven, and a pan, you can dirt your aquarium right now. All you have to do is go out in the backyard, dig up a nice patch, take it, put it in a pan, slap it in the oven and heat it for about 350 degrees. The next step is to take all of your plants out of your aquarium, put them into a big Rubbermaid tub, take 50% of the water out of your aquarium, put it in that tub and add your fish, then fill the rest of the setup tub with clean dechlorinated tap water at the exact same temperature, then put an air stone on it and slightly cover it. Your fish will be fine. The next step is to rip out your substrate, keep it wet while you do it so that you can save some of your beneficial bacteria then take your dirt rinse dried and put it in the bottom of your tank, cover it back up with dirt and take the airline tubing and slowly fill up your aquarium with tap water. Rinse it if it needs to be rinsed, drain it, fill it and then add slowly a bunch of dechlorinated tap water. The last step is to use your deconditioner and then add all of the water from your tub pouring it all with the fish back into the aquarium and wait for 24 hours. This should be done every 30 days.
2. Do some maintenance
You should at least clean your FX4 filters once a year. To do this take it out, rinse all the pads off, clean out your canister filters, make sure all the nasty stuff is out, clean out the impellers and take your time and get after it. The next thing is cleaning the lights that everyone tends to neglect most of the time and you do this by cleaning the back see reflectors if you have reflectors on your lights. This is something that you might want to consider because you lose about 7% for every bounce your lights take. The other thing is getting rid of the duckweed in the tank.
1. Support your local pet store
This is the last thing you can do to enjoy your aquarium with almost no money but it's going to cost you some money though it's important. The pet stores are places that have extremely high overhead because they're involved in great retail traffic locations. Supporting your local pet store can be very simple by just making a call, say, "Hey, I would like to get this, that and whatever else you think is cool." and they will glad to run into your credit card over the phone.
