What is a Botanical?

Botonical are dead and dying plants matter. It could be leaves, cones, barks, driftwood, and even sea pods. You don't necessarily need them in your tank.

Let's take vitamins, for example. As human beings, we can survive without vitamins, but with them, you get better. The same is true with botanicals.

What does Botanicals Do?

Botanicals release tannins, which are different acids, which break down and release more acid in the water, lowering the pH and softening the water.

However, it's not recommended to use Botonoicals with livebearer. Most Tetras and South American Cichlids will benefit from the tannins released from the water.

Why are Botanicals Important for Your Tank?

Botanicals can help prevent disease. The release of tannins has an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal property. This property that once protected plant matter when it was alive will now aid in protecting your fish. Some common issues with fish they will help with are fin rot and body or slime coat issues, and they'll also help prevent fungus buildup on eggs.

The botanicals also provide a biofilm, an excellent food source for smaller aquarium creatures and fries. They aid in breeding and keeping fish healthy. They are also recommended for any softwater fish.

Where to Get Botanicals?

Botanicals come in many different forms. Soft and hard, some of them are thinner pods, leaves, and other woodier type pods. You can buy them anywhere, most of the online retailers sell them.
