This species can be distinguished from other species of the same genus by a combination of individual characters of the males like the existence of an upper pectoral spot present; a dark band bellows the lower lip and a small round caudal spot. There are two types of males, the so-called yellow males, these have bright yellow cheeks and blue males, these have a blue lower region of the head.
