Sexing Tiger Plecos can be difficult as males and females look similar. However, during breeding season, males may develop small odontodes (bony growths) on their pectoral fins and along their cheeks.

Breeding Tiger Plecos in captivity can be challenging, but it is possible. They are cave spawners and will require a cave-like structure in the aquarium. Males will typically guard the eggs until they hatch, which can take up to 10 days. The fry should be fed small live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp or microworms.

Like many aquarium fish, Tiger Plecos can be susceptible to common diseases such as ich, bacterial infections, and fungal infections. Maintaining good water quality and hygiene, providing a balanced diet, and avoiding overstocking can help prevent illnesses.
