Spotfin Butterflyfish

The Spotfin Butterflyfish is a peaceful and popular marine species among aquarists. It has a distinctively round shape with a small mouth and a long, continuous dorsal fin. This species grows to a maximum length of 20 cm (8 inches) and is suitable for a medium to large-sized aquarium.

The Spotfin Butterflyfish is omnivorous and feeds on a variety of food items including crustaceans, small fish, and algae. In captivity, they should be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, or live foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and krill.

It is difficult to differentiate between male and female Spotfin Butterflyfish as they do not display sexual dimorphism.

Spotfin Butterflyfish have not been successfully bred in captivity. It is believed that they form monogamous pairs during the breeding season.

Spotfin Butterflyfish are susceptible to diseases like marine ich, velvet disease, and bacterial infections. To prevent diseases, maintain good water quality, and avoid introducing sick fish into the aquarium.

The Spotfin Butterflyfish is native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the east coast of Africa, and the Hawaiian Islands.

The Spotfin Butterflyfish is generally peaceful and can be kept with other non-aggressive fish species. However, it may become territorial towards other butterflyfish or fish with similar body shapes.

When introducing Spotfin Butterflyfish to a new aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly to prevent stress or shock. Float the sealed bag in the aquarium for about 20-30 minutes to adjust the temperature. Then, add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag every 10-15 minutes for an hour. Finally, use a net to transfer the fish into the aquarium.
