Kaligono Cichlids

Kaligono Cichlid (Nimbochromis polystigma) is a freshwater species of cichlid native to Lake Malawi in East Africa. They are a relatively large species of cichlid, with males growing up to 30cm in length and females reaching up to 25cm. They have an elongated body with a large head and a pronounced hump on their forehead, giving them their common name, Humphead Cichlid.

In their natural habitat, Kaligono Cichlids feed primarily on small fish and invertebrates. In captivity, they can be fed a varied diet of high-quality pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and krill.

Male Kaligono Cichlids typically have larger, more pronounced humps on their forehead and longer, pointed dorsal fins than females. However, determining the sex of juveniles and young adults can be difficult.

Kaligono Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders, with females incubating and hatching their eggs inside their mouth. During courtship, males will display their hump and bright colors to attract females. After breeding, females will hold the fertilized eggs in their mouth for approximately three weeks until they hatch.

Kaligono Cichlids are susceptible to common cichlid diseases such as ich, bacterial infections, and parasitic infestations. Maintaining good water quality and a varied, nutritious diet can help prevent these diseases.

Kaligono Cichlids are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa.

Kaligono Cichlids can be aggressive towards other fish, particularly other cichlids, and may require a large aquarium with plenty of hiding places and territories to establish a hierarchy. They should not be kept with smaller, more timid species of fish.

When introducing Kaligono Cichlids to a new aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly to prevent shock or stress. Float the bag containing the fish in the aquarium water for 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature, then gradually add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag over the course of an hour. Finally, use a net to transfer the fish to the aquarium.
