Smudge Spot Corydoras

The Smudge Spot Corydoras is a small freshwater fish that typically reaches an average size of 2 inches (5 cm) in length. They are peaceful and can be kept in groups of 5 or more in a minimum tank size of 20 gallons. They are native to South America, specifically in the Amazon River Basin.

In the wild, Smudge Spot Corydoras feed on small aquatic insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, they will eat a variety of prepared and live foods including sinking pellets, flakes, freeze-dried bloodworms, and brine shrimp.

The male Smudge Spot Corydoras is usually smaller and more slender compared to the female. During breeding, the female's belly will become noticeably fuller.

To breed Smudge Spot Corydoras, provide a separate breeding tank with fine gravel substrate and low lighting. The water should be slightly acidic with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 and a temperature of around 78°F (25.5°C). The female will lay eggs on plant leaves or other surfaces, and the male will fertilize them. After spawning, remove the parents and provide a diet of small live foods such as baby brine shrimp or micro worms for the fry.

Smudge Spot Corydoras are generally hardy fish and are not prone to any specific diseases. However, like all fish, they can be susceptible to common aquarium diseases such as ich, bacterial infections, and fungal infections.

It is important to maintain good water quality and perform regular water changes to prevent diseases and ensure the health of your fish. Avoid keeping Smudge Spot Corydoras with aggressive or large fish that may harm or eat them.

When introducing Smudge Spot Corydoras to a new aquarium, it is important to acclimate them slowly. Float the bag containing the fish in the aquarium for about 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature. Then, slowly add small amounts of aquarium water to the bag over a period of at least 30 minutes. This will allow the fish to adjust to the new water conditions and prevent shock.
