They are native to South America, specifically in the Amazon Basin, where they can be found in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded forests. The Severum Cichlid is a popular aquarium fish due to their attractive coloration and hardy nature. They can grow up to 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) in length and have a lifespan of around 10-15 years with proper care.

In their natural habitat, the Severum Cichlid feeds on insects, small crustaceans, and other small aquatic organisms. In captivity, they are omnivorous and can be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality pellets, flakes, live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and krill. It is important to avoid overfeeding as they are prone to obesity.

Severum Cichlids are sexually dimorphic, meaning males and females can be distinguished by physical characteristics. Males tend to have more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while females have a more rounded and shorter fins. Additionally, males develop a nuchal hump on their forehead as they mature.

Severum Cichlids are monogamous and form pairs during breeding. The breeding process is initiated by the male, who will court the female by displaying his fins and intensifying his coloration. The female will then lay her eggs on a flat surface, such as a rock or a broadleaf plant, while the male fertilizes them. The eggs hatch within 3-4 days, and the fry are free-swimming within a week. It is essential to provide plenty of hiding spots for the fry as they are very vulnerable to predation.

The Severum Cichlid is generally a hardy species, but like all fish, they can be susceptible to diseases. One of the most common ailments is Ich, which is caused by a parasite that manifests as white spots on the fish's body. Other common diseases include bacterial infections, fin rot, and swim bladder disease. Maintaining good water quality and avoiding overcrowding can help prevent these illnesses.

Severum Cichlids are generally peaceful, but they can become territorial during breeding and may exhibit aggression towards other fish in the tank. It is recommended to provide plenty of hiding places and visual barriers to reduce aggression.

When introducing a new Severum Cichlid to a tank, it is essential to acclimate them slowly to avoid shock or stress. Float the bag containing the fish in the tank for 10-15 minutes to allow the temperature to equalize. Then, open the bag and add small amounts of tank water to the bag every 10-15 minutes for an hour or until the water volume in the bag doubles. Once acclimated, gently release the fish into the tank.
